History of Jeeps

No one knows how the term "Jeep" came; different people have different views on it. The most common belief is that the US army had designed that vehicle for G.P (General Purpose vehicle), later it was transformed to the term "Jeep".

If we look at the history of Jeeps, we can see that the development of jeeps was done much before the First World War. During the First World War US army wanted a fast vehicle with lightweight. When the war was in progress the army called various vehicle manufacturers and gave a list of the required specifications and gave a time period of 49 days to make it. There were only two companies, which accepted the challenges named as Willys-Overland and The Bantam Car Company.

The Bantam Car Company built the first hand prototype within timeframe. Then the army tested the vehicle and finalized that the vehicle was perfect according to their needs and specifications. After that Ford and Willys submitted their prototypes based on Bantam Plan. Finally the Willys got the contract for making this vehicle because Willys Quad was very powerful than Bantam and Ford. Second reason was the financial condition. As Bantam was not financially stable, at that time when US army was providing large consignment of preparing jeeps.

Jeep played a vital role during the second word war. Even today it is a very important vehicle for the army of various countries. Today Jeeps are used for many purposes. Various automobile manufactures are offering their models with advance features and latest technologies. In India jeeps are also being used for personal purposes. The first jeep manufacturer, Willy had got the trademark for jeep from the United States. However, today Chrysler Corporation is the recent owner for this trademark.
